The League of Nations

The League of Nations met for the first time on February 2nd 1919. The league was established as a result of Woodrow Wilson's 14 points. It was the first global attempt at establishing an organisation that would mediate between nations and act to prevent war and ensure the best interests of the majority.

This first meeting of the league established the perimeters of it's authority. The League would be able to punish countries adjudged to have broken international law by imposing sanctions.

The League of Nations was a forerunner of the United Nations. There were several differences however. Many countries did not join the League of Nations, the League, whilst having the right to impose physical (military) sanctions, didn't have the means to pursue these sanctions.
