The First World War - 1916

The Brusilov Offensive occurred from 4th of June to 20th September in 1916. It had been named after a Russian field commander and was a major turning point in the course of the First World War.

The Russians, on the Eastern Front, were given ordered to manoeuvre themselves into a position opposite the Austrian army at the Galician border . This was a pre-emptive strike as the Russians anticipated a German offensive elsewhere. The Russians attacked under the commands of Russian General Alexi Brusilov who had chosen the location of the campaign carefully to ensure numerical advantage was held over the Austro- German forces.

Some successes for the Russians were that they had captured 200,000 Austrian soldiers taken in as prisoners. Also the Austrian army had been destroyed. Austrians had also stopped their invasion of Italy.

The Brusilov Offensive was written by Ayesha Amin, a Year 9 student at Laisterdyke High School.
