The Battle of Ramadi - The First World War - September 1917

The Battle of Ramadi was a British assault on Turkish positions in the Middle East. The town, Ramadi, is located on the banks of the Euphrates River. A successful assault and capture of the town, and destruction or capture of it's garrison would allow the British to drive further up the river and increase the pressure on the Turkish Empire.

British troops managed to encircle the town, with Cavalry outflanking the Turkish positions and blocking the roads to the rear of the garrison. Infantry and armoured cars manoeuvred into positions around the town and managed to secure the high ground around the town's defences.

The battle for Ramadi was remarkably short, lasting only days. The Turk's it seems had been unprepared for the British use of armoured vehicles and were possibly shocked by the outflanking manoeuvre that, for once, worked particularly effectively. Ramadi was taken with relative ease and lower than usual casualty figures.
