The First World War - 1918

Millions of Germans take part in a major offensive that nearly breaks through the limited Allied lines; Allied counter attacks using tanks and the American troops arrive in the Frontlines. The last year of the war was as traumatic and dangerous as each of the previous one's.

American troops arrive on the Western Front - and suffer the same fate as their British and French Allies.
Field marshall Sir Douglas Haig - issues a desperate plea for his men not to give an inch and to fight as though their backs are to the wall.
The war wasn't simply fought on the Battlefields of Western Europe. this image of devastation was taken in Hull, in february 1918 after an airraid.
