The Treaty of St. Germain - September 1919 The Treaty of St. Germain was the Allies peace settlement with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It's terms were very harsh, resulting in the disintegration of the entire empire and the creation of many new states, particularly in the Balkans region. Austria and Hungary were to become separate states, with democratic governments: the Hapsburg monarchy had collapsed by this point in any case. The government of Austria was also required to pay reparations to the Allies for costs incurred whilst fighting the war. The full treaty can be viewed at the Australian treaty series website. |
