First World War - Multimedia links

1914

An introductory movie that I put together for students starting their study of the causes of the First World War. Makes use of Franz Ferdinand's 'Bang Bang' alongside photos and video footage that provide some clues, and hopefully prompt some questions, about the way that Europe descending into war in 1914.

The Man Comes Around

Thanks to Tony Fox for sending me the link to this.

This movie uses the Johnny Cash song, 'The Man comes around' along with a selection of video video clips. It results in a very powerful visual overview of the First World War.

Remembrance Day

This was put together by one of my students for an assembly about the importance of Remembrance Day.

Vintage Media

FirstWorldWar.com provides an extensive collection of audio-visual resources from the First World War.

These range from songs sung by the troops to speeches by leading politicians. There are currently audio files from each year of the war and a growing number of video clips, which currently cover the early phases of the conflict. This fantastic resource can be accessed via this link.

The site also hosts a range of film clips that show what historic sites look like today. These are extremely useful, particularly when planning visits to the battlefields. These clips can be accessed via this link.

This BBC animation is an excellent intorduction to warfare on the Western Front.
The BBC have created a virtual tour of a First World War trench.
The National Archives provide a series of video clips and other mltimedia resources.
