War Poetry

The First World War was recorded by soldiers and civilians in many ways. There are many examples of soldiers recording their views of warfare via the writing of poems. These provide an interesting insight into the thoughts of soliders, ranging from the enthusiasm of signing up, the belief that it was right to fight for king and country and motivational poems, through to poems that record the desperation, horror and anxieties of war.

Examples of War Poetry:

Rupert Brooke - The Soldier

Wilfred Owen - Dulce et Decorum est

Siegfried Sassoon - Aftermath

German poetry - Argonne Forest, at Midnight

War poems can be used in a number of ways by Historians and extracts from poems may be used in GCSE examinations. This activity is a very brief example of some of the things that you may be asked to consider when looking at war poetry.
