Inside a Trench

Much of the fighting during the First World War was done from Trenches. Trench warfare has proved to be one of the most horrific to participate in and is an area of the First World War that all students should learn about.

Trenches like this were extremely hard to live in. Click here to listen to the memories of Charles Quinnell, who fought in the trenches on the Western Front. (Sound file hosted on the Imperial War Museum's web site).
trenchdiagram.jpg (11902 bytes) Diagram of a World War one trench. This illustrates how harsh the conditions must have been. Water has nowhere to go, conditions in the sleeping quarters must be damp, cramped and noisy to say the least.
trench6.jpg (10439 bytes) "Everyone carried a field dressing ..." Excellent sound file from the Imperial War Museum's site. Looking at images such as the one to the right it is clar why people would need to carry such dressings. Trenches often were not high enough to conceal someone stood upright, after barrages the soldier may have used craters to gain more protection. In conditions such as these it is obvious that illness and disease, along with mental illnesses caused by the strain of the war would be rife.
