BRADFORD

INTRODUCTION

This report will give detailed information on firstly the living and working conditions of two places, which are Bradford and Saltaire in and around the 1800s. Secondly I will compare the two cities and emphasize basic differences between them. Finally, I will give my opinion and give the major improvements in which I think could have been improved in the in the two cities. This will go in the conclusion.

POPULATION

In 1880, Bradford's population exploded since the census had been introduced, the population had increased nearly six times. The explanation of this happening is still unsolved. (If more people are born then die, then the population is obviously increasing.) Jobs became available for children so parents stopped worrying about feeding them. Because of this event, the population increased even more.

IMPROVEMENTS

During this time, there were major improvements in medical care as the introduction of inoculation was revealed against severe diseases such as smallpox. People had better food and things became cheaper because of transport and agricultural improvements. But even though things had extremely improved, the conditions were still poor. As time proceeded, more and more people started moving to the city where more jobs were available. Work was usually done in factories and mills.
